SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Roncalli finished up its season on a strong note, moving up a spot to secure fifth place in the team standings at the Class A State Tennis Tournament on Tuesday.
The Cavaliers won nine matches on the day to finish with a team total of 200.5 points. Rapid City Christian won the tournament.
Roncalli ended up with one fourth place finish and two fifth places in singles, plus two fifth place showings and one sixth place in doubles.
“Overall, we had a very solid tournament,” said Roncalli coach Paige Hermanson. “Battling to knock down some of the higher-seeded competition while also holding our own against everyone else, these guys gave it their best shot. There was a lot of mental toughness out on the courts these past two days.”
Gannon May finished fourth at flight three singles, while Palmer Johnson and Jacob Bellefeuille each won two matches on the day to finish fifth at flight two and flight six, respectively.
The doubles tandem of Johnson and May won twice to finish fifth at top flight doubles, while Jayden Reecy and Bellefeuille teamed up for two victories to garner fifth at third flight doubles.

Cason Hellwig and Sawyer Henrich split a pair of matches at second flight doubles to finish sixth.
“We had talked about putting our best foot forward at state and that’s what we did despite the numerous obstacles our team has dealt with this season,” Hermanson said. “Injuries, illness, weather, academics, extracurricular activities outside of sports all have an impact on the team, so I’m proud of the season we all have had.”
Milbank Area finished in eighth place with 146 points.
