Stoll making a positive impact on Faulkton track squad

A standout speedy senior has sprinted his way onto the South Dakota track and field scene this season.

Daniel Stoll moved to Faulkton before his senior season and has continued to build upon his past success.

Stoll, who finished fourth in sprint races and ran on some top relay squads at the North Dakota State Meet last spring while competing for Harvey-Wells County, made an immediate impact when he started running for the Trojans this season.

“When I first got here, the community was the most accepting community I’ve ever been in,” Stoll said. “That was just awesome. And then I get to run with these guys and it’s just a blast.”

Stoll, whose father is a Methodist minister, has grown accustomed to moving. He is in his fourth different location in the past four years, having spent a year at Fessenden, N.D., and Fargo, N.D., in the two years prior to Harvey.

“I’ve moved every year of high school,” Stoll said. “It makes you really good at meeting new people.”

Stoll will be on the move yet again this fall when he moves to Indiana where he will run at Grace College.

Before then, he has some unfinished business yet this spring.

Stoll has some of the fastest times in the state among all three classes. He would like to lower them even more in the next couple of weeks.

“In the 200, which is my main race, I’m trying to break 22 seconds,” Stoll said. “I’m .11 away from that. I’m trying to be the number one out of all the classes.”

Stoll is always up for a challenge.

“I always like to try to find the fastest people and try to catch them,” he said.

Stoll is also a key member on Faulkton’s relay squads, running the anchor legs. He said handoffs have not been a problem, because he has experience of running with a variety of teammates in the past.

“I worked really hard on learning handoffs in my past schools,” Stoll said, “so I just really got the hang of it of learning how to adjust to new people.”

Stoll said the competition level is about the same between North Dakota and South Dakota. However, he has been unable to play one of his favorite sports for a couple of years now.

“I used to play soccer for over nine years,” Stoll said. “When I moved here there was no soccer. I did football for a little bit.”

Stoll said he wasn’t even sure that Faulkton had track and field when he moved there, but he has definitely made the most of his final high school opportunity to compete.

“It’s been really great,” Stoll said of his senior season at Faulkton. “I meet a lot of people and everyone is just so awesome to talk to.”

LEADING THE WAY: There is a new top leader when it comes to open events this week.

Berkeley Engelland of Mount Vernon-Plankinton now has the best times in four races for Class A girls following a big weekend at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls. Engelland clocked the best times in the class in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and 800-meter run.

Meanwhile, Josiah Adams of Sioux Falls Christian, who previously led four open events in Class A, was bumped from the top spot in one of those races. He still tops the field in the 100, 200 and 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Simeon Birnbaum of Rapid City Stevens continues to lead Class AA and all classes in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200. Ashton Massey of Menno also leads three open events. She sets the standard in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the triple jump.

There are 11 athletes who lead a pair of open events, including Hamlin’s Gracelyn Leiseth in the Class A shot put and discus.

BY THE NUMBERS: The Sioux Falls Christian boys continue to set the pace as far as team leaders. The Chargers lead nine events in Class A.

Other team leaders include Rapid City Stevens in Class AA boys (five events), O’Gorman and Sioux Falls Lincoln in Class AA girls (four events each), Mount Vernon-Plankinton in Class A girls (six events), Viborg-Hurley in Class B boys (four events), and Colman-Egan in Class B girls (six events).
