Watertown grabs softball win over Golden Eagles

A pair of streaks continue at Koehler Hall of Fame Field on Monday afternoon.

Aberdeen Central’s losing streak continued with a 19-1 softball setback to Watertown, but Golden Eagles sophomore Reese Comstock extended her hitting streak to four straight games.

The Arrows did major damage from the top of their lineup as their number one and two spots in the order accounted for four hits, drove in five runs and scored 10 times.

Brooklyn Gronau, who pounded a home run over the left field fence, drove in four of those runs.

Central nearly had its first home run in program history, when Comstock hammered a ball that bounced off the top of the left-centerfield wall to account for team’s only run.

“It felt really good. I was worried I had lost all my power over the winter,” Comstock said. “I came out and just sent it.”

When asked if she thought it was gone, Comstock responded, “I was hoping that it would disappear and it didn’t. I was happy. I hit the wall. It was a really strong hit.”

Central coach Cassidy Schaar thought it was a home run when the ball left the bat.

“I was celebrating. I thought it was going to go over,” Schaar said. “Beautiful field, but if those fences are just a little bit lower, I think it would have been out. I was jumping up and down, but nonetheless, so excited for her to see that success in her hitting.”

Comstock has become a consistent hitter for the Golden Eagles and as a result is now the team’s leadoff batter.

“I started at three in the lineup and now I’m first,” Comstock said. “I didn’t think I should be first, but I guess they think that I see the ball.”

She said her goal is to jump start the squad from the leadoff position.

“I just want to get on base, get something going,” Comstock said, “try and get some momentum so we can get some runs in.”

That’s exactly what Schaar is looking for from the top of the batting order.

“We’re seeing a lot of consistencies in Reese and that‘s kind of what you need in a leadoff hitter, just knowing what to expect of them every time,” Schaar said. “We don’t have highs and we don’t have lows, but we see that consistent 1-for-3, 2-for 4, stuff like that, and that’s really what you need when you’re looking for that person to start games for you and really get the momentum going.”

Central is still having some trouble in the field, giving opponents extra outs. That is something that needs to change, according to Schaar.

“We’re not going to strike out a lot of girls,” Schaar said, “so when we throw groundballs and popups, we have to make those plays.”

That said, the Eagles did record a nifty double-play to get out of a bases-loaded jam when Ayrlie Waldo snagged a line drive and stepped on second base to double off the runner.

“That was one of our goals at the beginning of the season was to get a double play,” Comstock said.

With the regular season winding down, there are still numerous goals to be reached and one of the main ones is to continue to improve as a first-year program.

“We haven’t ever had travel softball,” Comstock said. “We’ve only ever had ever Parks and Rec league, which is something, but not as much as other teams.”

While the Eagles are still in search of their first win, they continue to lay the foundation for years to come.

“Just seeing improvement so that in the next few seasons, hopefully by the time I’m a senior and all my friends are seniors, we can have a good solid team and see some more wins,” Comstock said.

Central heads out west this weekend where it will face Rapid City Stevens and Sturgis.

Schaar knows the team’s best days are ahead.

“Teams are going to expect to take us lightly and I haven’t lost faith in my girls and I know that win is in our future,” Schaar said, “and we’re just going to continue keep working and chipping away, and continue to build on what we’ve been building.”
