EUGENE, Ore. – Simeon Birnbaum capped off a remarkable week of competition Sunday by winning the national high school boys’ one-mile run at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. The recent Rapid City Stevens graduate clocked a winning time of 4:02.22. Earlier this week, Birnbaum placed third in the 1,500-meter run against professionals with a time of 3:37.93. That is the second fastest clocking all-time for a high school runner. He also ran the second fastest high school time ever of 8:34.10 in winning the Brooks PR Invitational two-mile run. Gracelyn Leiseth, a recent graduate of Hamlin, won the girls’ shot put at the meet on Saturday with a throw of 52-feet, 1.75-inches. Leiseth, who will headed to the University of Florida, finished second in the discus on Friday.
