Brown County Speedway ready for multiple fireworks Friday

There will be no shortage of fireworks at Brown County Speedway Friday night.

In addition to actual fireworks, the show will also include the only appearance this summer of the NOSA Sprint Cars as well as double feature races in the Late Model division.

“It’s possibly our biggest night of the year,” said track official Terry Voeltz. “The fireworks brings a lot of people out and the sprints we hope will bring out some people. It’s a pretty big deal.”

Voeltz said there are a certain group of people that are loyal sprint car fans.

“There’s racing fans, stock car fans and sprint fans,” Voeltz said. “They’re not always the same people.”

Voeltz said the NOSA Buffalo Wild Wings will be the fastest cars to take the track at the local speedway this season.

“Last year we had them they ran their feature flag to flag, and if you would have went to the bathroom you would have missed the whole race,” Voeltz said. “I’m absolutely serious, because of how fast they went.”

Voeltz said the cars literally flew around the oval.

“I think the whole race took less than three minutes,” he said. “They’ll turn their laps in 11-12 seconds or something like that.”

Of course, it’s that time of the year for fireworks, and BCS will have plenty of them on Friday night.

“We’ve always put on a fireworks display. It’s a really nice display,” Voeltz said. “We always call it ‘in your face fireworks’ because we shoot them right in the infield. It’s a nice show.”

To top it all off, a set of feature races were rained out a few weeks ago, and it just so happens that the Late Model one will be made up this week, meaning there will be two features this weekend.

While there is plenty of excitement in the air in preparation for the big event, some of that has been dampened literally and figuratively because of Tuesday night’s rain.

When asked if it might rain on Friday night, Voeltz responded, “How do you know any more? This month has just been crazy. It says 80 percent chance and the next thing you know you can’t see across the street it’s raining so hard.”

This week’s rain wiped out hours of work to try and get the track ready for racing action.

“That stuff (Tuesday) night didn’t do us a dang bit of favors,” Voeltz said. “We put hundreds of hours into getting that track ready for this Friday night, and we had it ready and last night ruined it. We have to start over again.”

Make no mistake, Voeltz understands how much the area needs rain. It’s just that it can make life tough when it comes to preparing a rack track.

“It’s pretty frustrating. The rain is great. Everybody needs the rain. We know that. Rain water is miracle water. It does things that no other water can do,” Voeltz said. “And one of the things it does to the race track, it just softens it up way, way too much. We have to pack it all back in again, which you just spend hours and hours doing, because it takes that long to get it packed back hard enough.”

Officials had the track in pristine condition two weeks ago and it led to exciting feature finishes.

“Two weeks ago it was really good, top and bottom, and every single feature went right there to the end,” Voeltz said. “You didn’t know who was going to win it. That’s good. That’s what we want of course.”

Voeltz said the Fireworks Spectacular show, which will also include the Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds and Super Stocks, will offer something for the entire family.

“For family entertainment for the Fourth of July or the pre-Fourth of July, you can’t beat it,” Voeltz said. “You can load up all kids 15 and under, mom, dad and all the kids for 40 bucks.”

Obviously, Voeltz is looking forward to the racing program.

“We’re excited about it and I sure hope the people are,” Voeltz said. “I don’t know a better way to say it than you get more bang for your buck, because that’s what it is. It’s bang, bang, the fireworks and the sprint cars and double late model features.”
