MILBANK – Groton built a five-run lead and then held off Redfield to claim a 5-4 victory and win the championship of the Milbank Tournament in American Legion baseball action on Sunday afternoon.

Groton scored three times in the top of the first inning on just one hit. The squad scored on a bases-loaded walk and hit batter before Cade Larson added a sacrifice fly.

Groton padded its lead with a run in the third on a passed ball, and then added another run in the fifth on a fielder’s choice.

Redfield then mounted a comeback. Keaton Rohlfs had run-scoring singles in the fifth and sixth frames, to set the stage for the bottom of the seventh.

Kevin Weller drove in one run with a single and Camden Osborn had a sacrifice fly to slice the margin to a run. However, Redfield stranded the game-tying run at third base when Groton recorded the final out on a ground out to first base.

Cole Simon had three hits to lead Groton, while Ryan Groeblinghoff drove in a pair.

Rohlfs had two hits and two RBI for Redfield.
