A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 11-17:

Last year on June 15, 2022: Simeon Birnbaum of Rapid City Stevens ran the mile under 4 minutes (an all-time prep state record 3:59.51) to win the event at the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle. Birnbaum, who will be a senior this fall, became just the 17th United States high-schooler ever to run a sub 4-minute mile. Madison native Jeff Schemmel was the first South Dakota native to run a sub four-minute mile (3:59.4), running for Kansas State on June 1, 1974. Birnbaum is the first SD high schooler to accomplish the feat. Watertown native Steve Heidenreich also was a sub-4-minute miler for Indiana.

10 years ago on June 12, 2013: Barb Felderman retired after coaching South Dakota Tech women’s basketball for 32 seasons with 474 wins. She is a Doland native and NSU graduate.

20 years ago on June 11, 2003: Rapid City angler Linda Abelseth caught a 22-pound Northern Pike on a six-pound test line on June 11 while fishing for walleyes near Mail Shack Creek on Lake Oahe. Even though it was a trophy fish, she released it so another angler might get the chance to catch it on another day.

30 years ago on June 13, 1993: The South Dakota Jet Ski Association opened its fourth season of organized competitive racing at Lake Campbell in Brookings County.

40 years ago on June 11, 1983: The Redfield boys won the Class B all-sports team competition for the 1982-83 high school season as compiled by Roger Toland of the Rapid City Journal. The Pheasants were bolstered by their state championships in wrestling and cross country.

50 years ago on June 17, 1973: Gary Grove of Northern State was the winningest pitcher in the NAIA nation this season. He posted a 16-3 record in 100 innings of work for the conference champion Wolves (30-9).
