Multiple lanes of racing and strategic late-race moves led to exciting feature finishes at Brown County Speedway Friday night.

No race was tighter than the Street Stock main event where Jodie Michaelsohn of Aberdeen did not lead a single lap until he was able to slip past Maria Broksieck of Goodwin by mere feet right before the checkered flag.

“That was so close. I’m glad that I got a clear lane on the top that I could just hold ‘er to the floor, because I knew it would stick,” Michaelsohn said. “It was a great race. Maria did a helluva job underneath.”

Michaelsohn was trailing Kyle Anderson of Jamestown, N.D., late in the race and appeared destined for second place before a late caution flag opened the door.

“I think Kyle would have won it. I would have got second,” Michaelsohn said had the yellow flag not come out. “It was a great race. That’s how fast things can change, just like the weather.”

The Midwest Modified feature was equally as close a pair of North Dakota drivers battled it out right to the very end.

Brennon Weight of LaMoure, N.D., was running on the low side while his friend Lucas Rodin of Marion, N.D., ran the high side. Weight ended up winning the race by less than half a car length.

“Lucas, he’s my best friend. We grew right up down the road from each other, so it’s fun racing against him,” Weight said. “I kept getting tighter and tighter in the ditch and he kept rolling the top. I could hear him and I could see him.”

Weight eventually gravitated to the top on the final turn on the last lap and Rodin nearly snuck past him on the inside as the checkered flag dropped.

“The bottom was working good,” Weight said, “but like I said, the car kept getting tighter and tighter down there and I kept feeling like I was getting slower and slower. The laps ticked away just at the right time.”

A pair of Minnesota men engaged in a tight battle in the Moonshine Mod Tour Modified feature. Travis Saurer of Elizabeth, Minn., was able to hold off Zach Johnson of Lowry, Minn., to take the victory.

Saurer was hugging the bottom of the oval while Johnson was steadily gaining ground on the top side.

“I could hear him up there getting closer and closer,” Saurer said. “I was kind of trying to save a little bit, what I could. Once Zach got up next to me, actually I think he had me the one lap, I let ‘er all hang out the last few laps there.”

A couple of late caution laps made things interesting, but Saurer was able to maintain his position at the bottom of the track to hang on for the win.

“I was just trying to keep good traction off of four on that start and just not miss the bottom,” Saurer said. “There wasn’t much down there and if you loose your wheel and get up a car length, you’re out to lunch.”

Aberdeen’s Chad Becker waited for his opportunity and then pounced on it on the way to winning the Late Model feature. Becker was running in second when a caution flag was needed with seven laps remaining. From there, Becker beat the field into the first turn to grab a lead he never lost.

“I knew on the restart if they gave me the top, I could whip through one and two really good if I hit it perfect and hit my mark,” Becker said. “I hit my marks and I knew if I could get to the bottom in the other corner, I’d be good. That’s the only thing I was missing. It wasn’t equal on both ends. You kind of had to drive the race track hard.”

Still, the track allowed for multiple places to run.

“The track was smooth and fast,” Becker said, “and it was fun.”
