Circus racks up 18 hits, 18 runs in win over Groton

GROTON – Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar homered in its first at-bat to set the tone for the evening on the way to an 18-2 amateur baseball victory over Groton Locke Electric on Wednesday.

Colton Cox deposited the ball over the left field fence to start the game, leading to a six-run first inning for Circus, which had five extra-base hits in the contest.

Tyler Oliver added an RBI single, before Jesse Babcock had a two-run double and Lucas Heiser had a two-run single in the opening frame.

Groton responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning on Brian Hansen’s RBI double.

However, Circus was just getting started.

Aberdeen added a run in the second when Kelly Coates stole home, then tacked on four more runs in the third, two of them coming on a double by Niko Pezonella. Coates added a sacrifice fly and Oliver deliver another run-scoring single.

Circus scored two more runs in the fifth when Michael Babcock tripled and scored on a sac fly by Pezonella, and another run scored on a wild pitch. Aberdeen then concluded the contest with five more runs in the sixth. Oliver started the scoring with a bases-loaded walk, Ryan Ellingson doubled home two more runs, Jesse Babcock added an RBI single, and Tyler Newman brought in one more on a sac fly.

Meanwhile, Groton managed just one more run, that scoring on an error in the fifth.

Jacob Beuster went five innings for Circus, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters.

Coates and Oliver each had three hits to pace Aberdeen’s 18-hit attack. Cox, Michael Babcock, Pezonella, Ellingson, Jesse Babcock and Lucas Heiser each contributed two hits.

Pezonella, Oliver, and Jesse Babcock each drove in three runs.

Hansen had both of Groton’s hits.
