
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 2-8:
Last year on July 3, 2022: In only her third competition, Aberdeen Central senior Katie Witte placed third at the USA Weightlifting National Junior Championships in Las Vegas.
10 years ago on July 2, 2013: Kim Kaufman of Clark won the Island Resort Championship in Harris, Mich., for her first Symetra Tour title in only her third tour event since recently turning pro.
20 years ago on July 3, 2003: Vince Lloyd Skaff, 86, died after spending more than 30 years as the radio voice of the Chicago Cubs. He was born Vince Skaff in Beresford and was a 1940 graduate of Yankton College and 1935 graduate of Beresford High School. Vince Lloyd (his radio and TV name) also was the first radio voice of the Chicago Bulls and was the long-time voice of the Chicago Bears and he called Big Ten football games on WGN. He also worked on WGN-TV baseball broadcasts of the Cubs and White Sox and did play-by-play for pro wrestling matches.
30 years ago on July 4, 1993: Onida native Curt Byrum earned $36,000 by winning the Nike Tour’s White Rose Classic in Pennsylvania. Byrum is working his way back to the regular tour as back problems forced him off the PGA Tour last year.
40 years ago on July 7, 1983: Gerald Sayler of Aberdeen defeated John Simko of Sioux Falls to win the 35 and older men’s tennis title at the Black Hills Open.
50 years ago on July 8, 1973: Aberdeen native Stan Opp was one of 32 wrestlers in the nation who earned a NCAA post-graduate scholarship. Opp was a three-time national place-winner for SDSU, compiling a 94-19-4 record. At Aberdeen Central, Opp went 60-5-1 and won a pair of state titles. Opp will continue his education at SDSU, where he also will serve as the assistant wrestling coach.
