A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 23-29:

Last year on July 25, 2022: Onida native Chloe Lamb was selected as The Summit League’s nominee for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year. Lamb led her USD basketball team to the Sweet 16 last season and the Sully Buttes graduate will be an assistant coach for the University of Mary team this fall.

10 years ago on July 28, 2013: Two former South Dakota high school foes in 1971 had a 2013 track and field rematch in Berea, Ohio. Former Northern State multi-sport standout Dan Mehlbrech of Crooks edged David Ortman of Seattle for the high jump title in the men’s 60-64 age division at the National Senior Games. Mehlbrech cleared 5-1 to win his third national title in a row. But the second-place finishing Ortman won the long jump (17-5) and the 400 (56.78). In 1971 in Sioux Falls at the State B Track and Field championships, former Aberdeen resident Dan Somsen won the shot put title (53-11) to lead
Castlewood to the State B title with 27 points. Mehlbrech led Bridgewater to second with 26 points and Ortman led Freeman Academy to third with 25 points. Mehlbrech won the high jump title (6-0) in 1971 and teamed with Dwight Vondra, and brothers Dan and Kevin Graber to win the 880-yard relay (1:33.1). Ortman won the 120-yard high hurdles (15.0) title for Freeman Academy.

20 years ago on July 25, 2003: Former NSU basketball and track standout Kevin King was inducted into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame. King (1980-84) scored 1,986 career points and helped the Wolves win two district and one conference basketball championships.

30 years ago on July 29, 1993: Jamie Liudahl of Pierre scored 14 second-half points to give the North an 89-85 win over the South in the South Dakota All-Stars boys’ basketball game in Aberdeen. Carlin Clown Jr. of Dupree added 13 points for the winners while the South, hampered by 23 turnovers, was led by Baltic’s Kevin Costain with 19 points.

40 years ago on July 29, 1983: Former Aberdeen Central and Northern State basketball standout Scott Kusler has been named the boys’ basketball coach at Aberdeen Roncalli. He replaced Aberdeen native Bob Olson, who resigned to become the women’s basketball coach at Northern State. Olson took over the Wolves from Aberdeen native Curt Fredrickson, who resigned to enter private business. Kusler was an assistant coach at Bristol last season.

50 years ago on July 29, 1973: In the past two weeks of fundraising, more than $1.4 million has been raised to build a new athletic facility on the USD campus. The average donation for building the DakotaDome has been $55 per donor.
