A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 30-Aug. 5:

Last year on Aug. 1, 2022: The University of Sioux Falls will add men’s and women’s wrestling as its 18th and 19th sports teams with competition to start in the fall of 2023. Later in the month, the Cougars announced former Aberdeen Central coach Toby Bryant will be the school’s first women’s wrestling coach.

10 years ago on July 30, 2013: Groton was one strike away from its second straight American Legion Baseball State B championship in the top of the ninth inning before giving up a three-run lead. Peter Haught of Vermillion tied the score at 8 with his two out single. In the bottom of the ninth, Spencer Knecht of Groton hit his own two-out single to score Mason Madsen with the winning run for a 9-8 Groton win.

20 years ago on Aug. 2, 2003: John Huth of Aberdeen Central was named the state coach of the year in boys’ track.

30 years ago on Aug. 30, 1993: The South rallied to score all its points in the fourth quarter to win the South Dakota All-Stars football game in Aberdeen. The North took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 3-yard run from Byron Keil (Belle Fourche). The South made it 6-2 in the fourth quarter on a safety by Travis Dumke (Yankton), who tackled the North quarterback in the end zone. The South won 8-6 on an 11-yard
touchdown run by Jason Leber (Vermillion) with 6:31 left in the game.

40 years ago on July 31, 1983: The F.L. Thorpe softball club of Rapid City formed two weeks ago when it started practices. Its first competition of the year was the season-ending South Dakota Amateur Softball Association’s Class AA men’s state fastpitch tourney in Mitchell. Thorpe, led by the pitching of Jack Tennyson and the hitting of Tom Even, won the tourney to up their season record to 4-0.

50 years ago on July 29, 1973: A former teacher and coach at Lemmon and Hosmer, Dennis Kraft, has been named superintendent of the Aberdeen public schools. Kraft, 35, is a graduate of Aberdeen Central and Northern State and is replacing Roger Hanson.
