There will be a much different look to the Dacotah Insurance Rumble this weekend at Brown County Speedway.

There will be just two classes of cars, Late Models and Street Stocks, and the payout will look much different than it has in the past. There will no longer be a $10,000 to win race, but there will still be plenty of money at stake.

“We don’t have another one that’s close to it,” said track official Terry Voeltz of the total prize money. “It’s just by far the best. It’s not just the winning amount. They pay back good, just as well.”

The Rumble winner on Saturday night will pocket a total of $6,363. That amount is in honor of the late Dennis Moser who passed away during the off season. Moser’s car number was 63 when he competed.

Moser was not only a standout racer in the Sportsman and Late Model divisions, he also served in other roles at the speedway when he finished driving, such as being a flagman.

“He pretty much did it all. He was a tremendously good Late Model racer. He was a good as anybody,” Voeltz said. “He helped out with anything he could. If you needed something and you asked him, he’d be there. Of course, he did that for everybody. He touched a lot of lives. He did a lot of things for a lot of people.”

The ’63 theme’ will also be prevalent in other Late Model races. There will be two other features – one on Friday night and the other on Saturday night – that will pay the winning driver $2,563.

While there will likely be numerous drivers with a connection to Moser in attendance, Voeltz said that’s not why they modified the show.

“We’re doing it just because we feel as though Dennis is very deserving of this tribute,” Voeltz said. “He was a good friend of most of us for many years. Dennis and I have known each other for years and years and years. It was a tough loss, a very untimely loss. It shocked everybody, I think.”

Of course, the show doesn’t only highlight the Late Model class. Voeltz expects a big field of Street Stock drivers to be on hand as well.

“There’s only two classes running,” Voeltz said. “The reason we’re doing that is the Street Stocks are bringing in their tour race.”

They will also have three features (two on Friday and one on Saturday) that will pay the winning driver $1,000 in each race.

“That’s a pretty big deal for the Street guys. We’ll have the best Street Stock racers in WISSOTA here for this,” Voeltz said. “They put on a tremendous show, those Street Stocks. They always have a good race. It’s side-by-side. It’s a just good program. It’s a good class. One of my favorites.”

While normally there are five divisions during a weekly show at the speedway, Voeltz believes the car count will similar to a regular show despite having three fewer divisions this weekend.

“Even though we usually run five classes, we think we’re going to have as many cars as we have on a weekly basis, just with the two classes,” Voeltz said.

He is hoping that the track will feature multiple lanes of racing, which is always the goal.

“You want a minimum of two and hopefully three grooves,” Voeltz said. “We always try to have a bottom and a top, and if the middle comes around, that’s just a bonus. You can control the bottom and the top a lot easier than you can the rest of the track.”

As has been the case in the past, the Rumble is expected to draw some of the biggest Late Model names in WISSOTA.

Voeltz said long-time fan favorite Mitch Johnson of Hickson, N.D., will be among those competing.

“Mitch Johnson is coming and he hasn’t been here for a long time,” Voeltz said. “I think he might have won the very first Rumble I had.”

Other notables expected to compete include Don Shaw, Dave Mass, and Brad Seng.

“There’s a lot of big names coming,” Voeltz said.

There will be plenty of competition waiting for them including Aberdeen’s Chad Becker (national points leader), Josh Skorczewski (second in national points), and Kent Arment, along with Huron’s Cole Searing.

“We’ve got some heavy hitters here in town for these boys to come take on,” Voeltz said, “so it ought to be good.”
