The dust was not the only thing that was flying on Saturday night at Brown County Speedway as drivers competed in the annual Dacotah Insurance Rumble.

Tyler Peterson of Hickson, N.D., capped off a huge weekend by winning the Late Model Rumble feature, to go along with his feature victory on Friday night, claiming nearly $9,000 for those two wins. He also finished second in another feature race on Saturday.

Peterson earned $6,363 in the Rumble race in memory of the late Dennis Moser. While Peterson did not know Moser personally, he was honored to get the win.

“I never got to meet Dennis, but I heard all sorts of things about him through Facebook and just people at the races,” Peterson said. “I’ve never been here with a Late Model before, so to win this weekend and get a second, you can’t ask for much more than that, so it’s huge. It’s my biggest Late Model win to date.”

Peterson has been on a roll this season, claiming several wins during his 2023 racing campaign.

“It’s our ninth win in 17 races,” Peterson said. “It’s been incredible, man. I can’t wait for the rest of the year.”

The race featured several lead changes before Peterson finally took the lead and held off other drivers for the win. Peterson described the challenge of getting the win.

“(Chad) Becker got by us and led for quite a while. He got out front and I was just like, man I think we’re going to settle for second or third here, and then with about 10 laps to go he started getting really tight over in three and four and my car started freeing up a bit,” Peterson said. “We got to lap traffic and that’s when I made my move because he went high going around one and we got lucky, I guess.”

Peterson said the constant dust blowing around on the track made visibility an issue throughout the race.

“I must’ve been breathing hard. I started fogging up my helmet, and I couldn’t see much,” Peterson said. “I was just ripping tear-offs at the end and just trying to survive until the end.”

Peterson thanked his team and looks forward to being back for more races in Aberdeen.

“Just hats off to the whole crew here,” Peterson said. “It was an awesome weekend and we’ll definitely be back next year.”

In an earlier Late Model feature, Chase Gelling took home the win, his first at the speedway.

“The past two years we’ve been close, just never could get it done, but tonight it feels great to finally get the first one out of the way here,” Gelling said. “Not the first one career wise, but first one in town here.”

Gelling noted that the track had its ups and downs.

“It was kind of cowboy up on the top, but there wasn’t much you could do, so everyone giddied up and that’s where we went,” Gelling said.

Gelling said it took patience to get the win.

“We got into lap traffic and those guys tried to go down below and get them, but I kind of stayed on the top and just rode behind the lap cars just waiting for either a caution or someone trying to pass me to get by me there,” Gelling said.

Gelling was grateful for all the support he had on Saturday.

“It just felt great to have a good majority of my friends and family here and all the fans in the crowd tonight,” Gelling said. “It’s a great feeling for sure.”

The Aberdeen native feels good about his vehicle into the rest of the season.

“I feel pretty confident about our car going into the upcoming weeks, even after this 40-lap feature,” Gelling said. “We’ve got a good piece right now, so it’s going good.”

In the Street Stock class, Kyle Anderson held off Jonny Carter of Fairmont, N.D., and Justin Vogel of Brooten, Minn., to claim a close win in the final laps after the race hit its only caution with two laps remaining.

Anderson described his strategy in the final two laps of the race.

“Just make sure once we get back, I’ve got my stuff together and just keep hitting marks,” Anderson said. “That was definitely not the rhythm breaker I wanted to have, that last caution, the two to go, green, white, checkered.”

Anderson said he failed to hear who was behind him on his radio, which actually became a good thing for him.

“It was a good thing I didn’t hear it because there was quite a bit of confidence I gained not knowing who was behind me,” Anderson said. “It was just good and I knew I had to make two more laps and that was it.”

The Jamestown, N.D. native also noted that the track was in good condition all evening.

“It was a great track tonight. It was amazing,” Anderson said. “Top line was there. Bottom was there. There was even a little bit in the middle after the Late Models, so just had to mind your own business and just keep plugging away.”

Anderson said the win felt good after not performing the best last weekend.

“It’s awesome. It’s quite a turnaround from last weekend,” Anderson said. “Last weekend we finished one heat race and DNF’d all three other times we were on the track and flipped in our heat race on Saturday last week, so there just all top fives and a win this weekend. It’s just a helluva rebound and we needed it bad.”

Racing continues at 7 p.m. Friday.
