HURON – Aberdeen Central scored five goals in the first five minutes of play and cruised to a 10-0 Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ soccer win over Huron Tuesday afternoon.

Central’s Deshani Peters had a hat trick by the end of that opening spurt and finished the half with four goals. Kailyn Poppen notched two goals and an assist and Abby Witte also had two goals in the half, as Central eased its way to its third straight shutout victory.

“We did a really good job of attacking,” said Golden Eagle coach Merle Aske. “Huron is not the normal opponent we see on a day-to-day basis. We just talked about doing the work we need to do.”

Of Central’s 10 goals, six of them were assisted, which was a promising note for Aske, who said his team was scoring in ways that would work against most opponents.

“The girls did a good job of getting the ball wide and putting it in front of the net, and putting it in dangerous positions,” Aske said. “And we had girls that did a good job of finishing. … That’s the big key. One person wasn’t just running down the field and scoring the ball.”

Central will put its three-game win streak on the line Saturday when the Golden Eagles play host to Brandon Valley at Brownell Activities Complex. Game time has been moved up to 10:30 a.m. due to the forecasted heat.

Aske said his team will need to be prepared to hold focus.

“(The Lynx) are going to hold good defensive pressure and counter attack when we get out of position,” Aske said.
