Golden Eagles remain unbeaten with win over Stevens

RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central made it a West River weekend sweep Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 comeback victory over Rapid City Stevens in non-conference volleyball action.

The Golden Eagles dropped the first set of the match by a 25-20 count, but rallied for wins of 25-11, 25-15 and 26-24 in the next three sets to finish off the match victory.

“We had some kids step up,” said Central coach Jackie Bindenagel of the comeback, which moved the Eagles to 3-0 on the young season.

Grace Kuch led the way offensively with 16 kills and added 13 digs and a pair of service aces for good measure. Lauryn Burckhard notched 11 kills and Ashley Wangler had 10.

Ayrlie Waldo dished out 22 assists and a service ace, while Emma Dohrer finished with 15 assists. Madison Miller had three aces and nine digs, as the Golden Eagles closed the match with nine aces from the service line, giving them 21 total aces on the weekend.

Central will head to Huron on Thursday for an Eastern South Dakota Conference matchup. The Golden Eagles will host Pierre next Saturday for their home opener.

Serving: Aberdeen Central 90-95 9 aces (Madison Miller 22-23 3 aces, Grace Kuch 13-13 2 aces, Sawyer Bahr 18-18 2 aces).

Hitting: Aberdeen Central 94-108 49 kills (Kuch 35-37 16 kills, Lauryn Burckhard 27-31 11 kills, Ashley Wangler 11-13 10 kills).

Setting: Aberdeen Central 95-95 40 assists (Ayrlie Waldo 54-54 22 assists, Emma Dohrer 34-34 15 assists).

Digs: Aberdeen Central 48 (Kuch 13, Bahr 10, Miller 9).

Blocks: Aberdeen Central 8 solo 2 assists (Taryn Hermansen 3 solo 1 assist, Taryn Nieman 2 solo 1 assist).
