Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 6-12:

Last year on Aug. 12, 2022: Aberdeen Central goalie Camden Fauth scored a rare goal with an entry kick from his own goal box. His 68-yard goal (about 60 yards in the air) helped the Golden Eagles defeat Spearfish 5-2 at Swisher Field in Aberdeen.

10 years ago on Aug. 6, 2013: Presentation College athletics added a female Saint Bernard puppy (Spirit) as its new mascot.

20 years ago on Aug. 10, 2003: Sioux Falls Post 15 West survived a late Rapid City Post 22 rally to claim the State A American Legion baseball championship in Pierre. Despite allowing 10 runs in the final four innings of the nine-inning matchup, Sioux Falls hung on to win 11-10. The win snapped a three-year reign by Post 22. Trailing by just a run in the top of the ninth inning, Rapid City loaded the bases with just one out. However, Post 22 hit into a double play to end the game.

30 years ago on Aug. 12, 1993: Coach Dave Ploof and his Rapid City Post 22 baseball team won the American Legion state title for the 21st time in the past 24 years in Mitchell. Post 22 is now 61-4 on the season.

40 years ago on Aug. 7, 1983: John Carrels and Bruce Boland of Aberdeen won the doubles championship at the South Dakota Adult Open Tennis Tournament in Sioux Falls. Carrels and Aberdeen native Maria Bell, now of Sioux Falls, won the mixed doubles championship. The tourney drew 260 players.

50 years ago on Aug. 11, 1973: Pat Jefferson of Rapid City became South Dakota’s first national amateur boxing champion. He won the 112-pound title at the National AAU Junior Olympics in Cheyenne, WY.
