MILBANK – Milbank Area finished with a pair of champions, while Aberdeen Roncalli earned a total of six top ten finishes Monday at the Milbank Breathe Easy Cross Country Meet at Whetstone Creek Golf Course.
On the girls’ side, Milbank’s Ashlynn Batchelor captured first-place with a time of 16:17.33, ahead of runner-up and Waubay-Summit runner Madison Zirbel (16:55.87).
Aberdeen Roncalli had four runners finish in the top ten, with Addison Cassady leading the team with a third-place finish.
Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar was pleased with Cassady’s performance.
“I was really impressed with Addison. She was up there with some really good runners,” Lesnar said. “To see Addison run with them was good to see.”
Teammate Sarah Schmidt finished in fourth place, while Paige Schmidt and Hazel Kannegieter finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
“I thought Sarah and Paige ran excellent, and they ran a good solid race and competed well,” Lesnar said. “I was impressed with Hazel’s efforts at the end.”
Other Roncalli girls’ runners included Claire Peterson finishing in 15th place.
On the boys’ side, Milbank’s Payton Brown won the title with a time of 13:30.92, followed by Tri-State’s Kaleb Foltz (13:50.70). Milbank runners James Batchelor, Bryan Meyer, and Isaac Graham rounded out the top five.

Roncalli’s Paul Gutenkauf and Matthew Peterson finished just outside the top five, placing sixth and seventh, respectively.
“I thought those boys came out and competed,” Lesnar said. “Matt’s a little more inexperienced than Paul, but they really pushed each other and made each other do really well.”
Isaac Price finished in 14th place for the Cavaliers, and Ben Bradley took 18th.
“I thought they came and competed really well,” Lesnar said.
Other Roncalli boys’ runners included Beau Price in 24th place and Jude Bent in 25th place.
Lesnar said it was good to have a meet and a starting point for the runners so that they can improve times moving forward.
“Part of it is just getting some experience on the course, and hopefully we get some solid weeks of training in,” Lesnar said.
The Cavaliers have a busy week with their second meet in four days at the Redfield Invitational on Thursday.
“It’s always been a good meet for us,” Lesnar said. “It’s at 10 a.m. so it’s a little bit cooler before all the high heat comes, especially this week, so hopefully we have another good race here in a couple of days.”
