REDFIELD – The Aberdeen Roncalli boys’ golf team claimed its fifth straight Northeast Conference championship behind individual medalist Andrew Gerlach Tuesday at Fisher Grove Country Club.

The Cavaliers have now won 15 of the last 20 NEC titles and 22 such championships in school history.

“Great team win for Roncalli today,” said Cavaliers coach Jon Murdy. “With not having the best start for all our players, it was great to see them turn it around and play well.”

Perhaps no one exemplified that turnaround better than Gerlach, who bogeyed two of the first six holes, including a triple-bogey on the sixth. Gerlach promptly birdied the seventh hole, then went on to claim a two-stroke win over teammate Finn Anderson with his round of 75.

“I’m happy for Andrew Gerlach getting a win at the NEC,” Murdy said. “He has been working hard all summer. It’s great seeing his hard work pay off.”

Similarly, Anderson had some struggles out of the gates, but turned around and came in one-under on the back nine to finish with a 77.

Jesse Hernandez finished in a tie for fifth for the Cavaliers, and Aiden Hernandez chimed in with a tie for eighth, putting four Cavaliers in the top 10 individually.

As a team, Roncalli posted a round of 320, 19 strokes ahead of second-place Milbank Area.

“Every member of the team wants to keep improving, which will make it fun to see how the rest of the season will play out,” Murdy said.

Owen Fischer of Milbank and Brevin Fliehs of Groton tied for third place.

The Cavaliers head to Huron on Friday for the Huron Invite at Broadland Creek Golf Course before returning to compete in the Hub City Invitational at Lee Park next Tuesday.

Team scores: 1, Aberdeen Roncalli, 320; 2, Milbank Area, 339; 3, Groton, 341; 4, Redfield, 371.
