FRANKFORT – Northwestern’s Ella Boekelheide won her second race in as many weeks and Lance Bradley of Standing Rock, N.D. topped the boys’ field during the Redfield Invitational Cross Country Meet Thursday at Fisher Grove State Park.

Boekelheide, who won the Pierre Invitational last week, finished with a time of 18:20.10, nearly a minute ahead of runner-up Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock, who clocked a time of 19:15.54. Clark-Willow Lake’s Kamryn Nesheim, Potter County’s Dannika Kaup, and Deuel’s Jaycee Hourigan rounded out the top five.

Aberdeen Roncalli placed one runner in the top ten, as eighth-grader Addison Cassady earned a tenth place finish, recording a time of 20:23.78.

Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar was impressed with Cassady’s performance.

“She just went out there and ran a solid race,” Lesnar said. “She was sitting in that 13-14 range throughout the race and then got herself in that top ten at the end. She’s got a lot of grit, so that’s fun to see.”

Other Roncalli girl’s runners included Hazel Kannegieter placing 23rd (21:28.93), Claire Peterson placing 26th (21:47.31), Paige Schmidt finishing 30th (21:57.05), and Sarah Schmidt taking 32nd (22:02.99).

Lesnar said he saw improvements from the girls at the meet.

“Almost all the girls exceeded what they did already, pacing-wise, so that was a lot of fun to see,” Lesnar said. “Four of the girls already beat their season best from last year, so that was good to see.”

Aberdeen Christian’s Lucy Jones finished in 63rd place with a time of 31:29.93.

In team standings, defending State B champion Potter County won with a score of 14 points, followed by Clark-Willow Lake (25) and Northwestern (41). Aberdeen Roncalli and James Valley Christian tied for fourth with scores of 43.

Lesnar mentioned Potter County, Clark-Willow Lake, and Northwestern as quality programs, and was glad to see his team compete with those teams.

“You know, there were some really good teams there,” Lesnar said. “To be in that area with those three teams, that feels pretty good to be at.”

On the boys’ side, Bradley won the individual title with a time of 16:30.85. Potter County’s Nicholas Schlachter placed second covering the distance in 16:59.60, followed by Northwestern’s Lincoln Woodring, who finished with a time of 17:04.91. Dupree’s Jessup Pederson (17:19.61) and Northwestern’s Nathan Melius (17:39.12) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Roncalli’s lone top ten finish came from senior Paul Gutenkauf, who earned a ninth-place finish with a time of 18:16.63. Lesnar noted that Gutenkauf is closing in on his personal record.

“He’s about a second away from his PR, so that’s good to see,” Lesnar said. “Hopefully we can keep track of those times and keep moving the team along.”

Other Roncalli boy’s runners included Matthew Peterson placing 33rd (19:16.73), Isaac Price taking 43rd (20:01.30), Ben Bradley finishing 44th (20:15.37), Beau Price placing 68th (22:05.81), and Jude Bent finishing 74th (22:31.34).

“I thought the boys ran really well,” Lesnar said.

Dupree captured the boys’ team title with a score of 15. Northwestern finished runner-up with a score of 23. Standing Rock (35), Frederick (37), and Faulkton (66) rounded out the top five, with Roncalli finishing in sixth place with a team score of 70.

Lesnar said he has seen the runners improve already this season by applying what they have learned so far.

“We took what we did on Monday and we broke it down and looked at things we can improve, and some of the kids were already applying those, so it’s a good sign for the season I think,” Lesnar said.

The Cavaliers will now turn their attention to the Salmi-Sahli Invitational on Thursday at Lee Park Golf Course. Lesnar says he is looking forward to the opportunity.

“It’s always a fun one. We’re thankful that the AA’s let us hang with them for a day,” Lesnar said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
