Central splits tennis duals with Rapid City squads

The Aberdeen Central girls tennis program split a pair of matches to open the Elliott Extravaganza Friday, claiming a 9-0 win over Rapid City Central and dropping a match by the same score to Rapid City Stevens.

Golden Eagle coach John Vogel said it was a mixed bag of reactions following the loss to Stevens.

“I normally subscribe to the idea of when you lose, it’s a learning opportunity,” Vogel said. “Well, today we should have learned a lot, because Stevens showed us why they are one of the top teams in the state.”

There were some bright spots of play throughout the match, Vogel said, but those were to scattered to come up with a win.

“All six of our singles players struggled to put together two competitive sets,” he said. “Livia (Douglas) and Riley (O’Keefe) had a great first set at flights four and six. And Avery (Tennant) came back and played a great second set at flight two, but we’ll have to work on sustaining that level of play for longer stretches if we want to compete with them at state.”

Doubles play went better for the Golden Eagles, though, again, not well enough to claim a victory. Douglas and Laney Gonsor took their opponents to a third-set tiebreaker at flight two, but couldn’t quite pull off the victory.

“(They) had a few loose points at the end of the second, which cost them the set,” Vogel said. “Unfortunately, they were not able to regain their confidence going into the third-set tiebreaker, and whenever that happens in tennis, much like life, you’re in trouble.”

The Golden Eagles did end up with the win over Rapid City Central, aided in part by a handful of open flights in which the Cobblers did not field a player.

Central will be back in action Saturday, taking on Pierre in the morning before closing out the weekend with its annual match against Roncalli at 4:15 p.m.
