Central takes down foes and bees, can’t overcome weather

MADISON – Aberdeen Central fended off the bees but couldn’t solve the weather Tuesday, claiming a girls’ tennis victory over Vermillion before rain washed out a second match against Madison in the Madison Triangular.

“We started with doubles against Vermillion, and you could tell we had three days off,” said Central coach John Vogel, referencing a heat-related postponement of the Golden Eagles’ matches last Saturday.

Despite the rust, however, Central was able to claim two out of the three doubles matches, the lone exception coming at flight one, where Julie Knie and Avery Tennant fell in a marathon match that ended with a 10-2 tiebreaker that fell Vermillion’s way.

“Hats off to Vermillion’s flight one team,” Vogel said. “They played a more aggressive style and got us.”

The Golden Eagles regrouped after doubles and swept through the singles matches with relative ease, despite the presence of some uninvited guests.

“I thought we rebounded quite nicely in singles,” Vogel said. “We not only had to deal with our opponents, but the bees were out in force and a few of us got stung.”

That would be the end of the Golden Eagles’ recordable matches, however, as rain wiped out half of the singles matches against Madison despite a switch to 10-game pro sets.

“We won all the varsity matches that were completed before the weather turned,” Vogel said, “so that was a nice way to end.”

Central will turn its attention to its first home match of the season next Monday when the Golden Eagles play host to St. Thomas More at the Holgate Courts.
