PIERRE – It was a solid, albeit not perfect, start to the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tennis Tournament for Aberdeen Central on Monday.

The Golden Eagles won five of their six singles matches and nearly had all six, before dropping a close match to conclude the day. Central is currently in third in team points with 70, behind Watertown with 90 and Mitchell with 78.

“We had four of those tricky 5-4 (seed) matchups and we got three of them, so that’s great,” said Central coach John Vogel.

Monday’s results were bittersweet as the Golden Eagles grabbed a pair of wins over opponents that had beaten them, but also lost to one that they had defeated.

Laney Gonsor at flight three and Reese Comstock at flight five both reversed previous results against their opponents.

Vogel was impressed with Comstock’s 10-1 victory.

“That first round match was probably the best I’ve ever seen her play,” Vogel said. “That girl had no shot. Reese was on fire today.”

The only downside of the day was a narrow setback by Julia Knie at top flight singles, who fell 10-8 against a foe she had beaten last week.

“She had the early pressure on her,” Vogel said. “She fell down kind of big and then made a comeback and was serving at an 8-9 game to make it to the breaker, and it didn’t happen.”

A full day of action will take place when play resumes today with the conclusion of the singles and all of the doubles matches.
