SISSETON – Groton captured the team championship at the Region 1A Golf Tournament on Monday. Aberdeen Roncalli finished third behind runner-up Sioux Valley. All three teams qualified for the State A Tournament next week in Rapid City.
Milbank Area’s Jonathan DeBoer won medalist honors with a 79. Groton’s Brevin Fliehs and Roncalli’s Finn Anderson were among five golfers who all finished in a tie for second with 80s.
Jace Johnson and Carter Simon of Groton finished ninth and 10th, respectively.
Roncalli’s Jesse Hernandez tied for 11th and Lucas Daggett tied for 15th.
While the Cavaliers qualified their team for the state tourney, Roncalli coach Jon Murdy said his golfers were aiming for better than their 344 team total.
“The boys are disappointed in their play today, but it was good to have this before going to state,” Murdy said. “Now we know what to work on for the week to get us ready for next week.”

Murdy said it was a three-way battle for the team title as Groton finished with a 335, and Sioux Valley a 338.
“Congratulations to the Groton golf team on a well-played event,” Murdy said. “It was fun to watch the leaderboard coming towards the end between us, Sioux Valley and Groton. We all had a lead at one point or another with about 4-5 holes left.”
The State A Tournament is set for next Monday and Tuesday at Hart Ranch in Rapid City.
