Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Sept. 3-9:

Last year on Sept. 3, 2022: The world’s biggest football pre-game show, ESPN’s College Game Day, gave South Dakota a lot of love on opening weekend of the college football season. The crew talked about the “dangerous” SDSU Jackrabbits against Iowa; the possible resurgence of the University of Washington program under new coach and Milbank native Kalen DeBoer; and USD’s game against Kansas State.

10 years ago on Sept. 7, 2013: Northern State played its first triple-overtime football game in program history, nipping Wayne State 29-27 on a TD pass from Jared Jacobsen to Tanner White followed by a game-deciding two-point conversion run by Terrelle Walker in third OT. The teams combined for four blocked field goals, including three that would have won the game.

20 years ago on Sept. 5, 2003: Defending Eastern South Dakota Conference and state champion Aberdeen Central is an overwhelming choice by the ESD coaches to repeat as conference champions. Coach Greg Murley’s Golden Eagles went 39-3 last season in Murley’s first year as head coach.

30 years ago on Sept. 4, 1993: The SDSU football team led Montana 38-7 with 23 minutes left in the game in Missoula. However, the Grizzlies rallied to take a 45-41 lead with 4:39 left. The Jacks rebounded to take a 48-45 lead on Mike Myers’ 15-yard TD catch (from Todd McDonald, with an Adam Vinatieri PAT). But Montana won 52-48 on a 42-yard TD pass (Dave Dickenson to Scott Gurnsey) with 21 seconds left.

40 years ago on Sept. 5, 1983: At the 51st annual South Dakota Horseshoe State Championships in Spearfish, Leigh Dunker won his 30th men’s state title by mowing down a field that included three former state champs. The 68-year-old Warner man won his first state championship in 1934.

50 years ago on Sept. 7, 1973: Groton defeated host Eureka 2018 in a high school football game that lasted more than three hours (believed to be the longest in state history at the time) and five overtimes. The score was tied at 12 at halftime, and neither team scored in the next two quarters and the first four overtime periods, in which each team was given the ball on the opponents’ 10-yard line with four plays to score. In the fifth OT, Eureka scored on third down when Wayne Isaak passed to Charles Mehlhaff. The conversion run failed. Groton then got the ball and also scored on third down on Harvey Fliehs’ run. Don Abeln then ran in the game’s first successful conversion to give his Tigers the win.
