Aberdeen Christian gave in early, but ended on a high note on Monday.

The Knights rallied past Webster 21-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-22 for a non-conference volleyball win at the Christian Gym.

Christian coach Sara Powell was pleased with her team’s balanced attack.

“Very happy how they played. They came out on fire, so definitely was nice to see,” Powell said. “Three of our hitters were close to double digits tonight in kills, so that was fun. Everyone just played so well as a team.”

The Knights jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set and held a slim lead throughout. However, the Bearcats eventually took over late and took set one.

Webster coach Vanessa Bloom said her team came out strong.

“The first set we kind of came out stronger than what we maybe were showing the rest of the night,” Bloom said.

The Knights strongest set came in set two as Christian built a 16-1 lead, thanks, in part, to strong serving from Chloe Bosma, who finished with nine aces on the evening.

“Chloe was really on tonight,” Powell said. “They had some defensive struggles and we just decided to take advantage of that. I gave her numbers the entire night and she was hitting them, so it was good.”

Despite Webster’s efforts to mount a comeback, the Knights were able to hold on for the set two win.

“(We) just couldn’t get behind our ball and get that pass,” Bloom said. “We know our girls can do it. We came back a little bit, but they have some servers. Good servers on Aberdeen Christian keeps you working.”

Christian freshman middle hitter Sophia Eichler said the team came into the second set with energy, which carried them through the rest of the match.

“I just feel like we got the energy and we all kept it together,” Eichler said. “We kept it steady the whole game and we all worked as a team and played really hard.”

The Knights carried the momentum into the third and fourth sets, although the Bearcats made it difficult to close out each set.

“I told the girls in between sets, I was like you just keep the momentum and the energy on our side and don’t let them get up, and that’s what we did, so I’m proud of them,” Powell said.

Eichler added that the crowd also helped encourage the team throughout the match.

“We had a good student section, too, tonight, so that’s awesome,” Eichler said.

Bloom said the Bearcats never could fully recover from the second set.

“Our communication, unfortunately, went downhill and we know this game is about communicating,” Bloom said.

While all eyes were on the match on Monday, Aberdeen Christian held its “Pink Out” night in honor of Michelle Ramirez, who is battling stage 4 breast cancer. Ramirez’s daughter, Mia, is a junior varsity player for the Knights, and Powell said the team and school prepared for weeks to support Ramirez on the special night.

“This was preparation, weeks of us doing it, and the amount of support from everybody has been outstanding,” Powell said. “The crowd was amazing tonight. We love her and we did it for her tonight.

The Bearcats also showed support for Ramirez by giving a donation of their own, and Bloom was glad to see her team show the support.

“It was awesome,” Bloom said. “We talked about being good people first and that totally just fit with what we did tonight and what you guys are doing here, that’s amazing.”

Webster (9-14) will return home to host Langford Area in its final home game tonight. It will also be a breast cancer awareness night for the Bearcat community, and Bloom is hoping the Bearcats can rally around the support they show their community.

“It’s our Dig Pink, and I hope that as we’re going out to sponsor some of our own community members, we can hopefully rally behind that and finish out our last home game as well with that victory that we know we can do,” Bloom said.

Eichler, who finished with two aces and one block, said consistency will be key when the Knights (11-17) host Ipswich tonight in the final home match of the season.

“It might be hard. We’re going to be a little bit tired probably from this game, but we just need to start strong and be consistent through the entire game,” Eichler said.

Powell said her team cannot back down against Ipswich in the last home game.

“They’re a young team, too,” Powell said. “We just can’t back down. We just need to stay strong. If we play how we did tonight, we should be alright, but I just don’t want them to get comfortable. I want them just to keep moving strong.”
