Cavaliers, Bulldogs open play at State A Tennis Tournament

SIOUX FALLS - Aberdeen Roncalli won matches at seven different flights on Monday, while Milbank Area advanced two players into the semifinals during the opening day of the Class A State Girls' Tennis Tournament. Roncalli will be in action in eight of the nine flights when play resumes today. The Cavaliers scored 125.5 points during the first day and sit in eighth place, while Milbank Area is right behind with 111 points. Roncalli coach Jason Haskell was pleased with how well his players competed in the elements. "Much warmer than usual for a state tournament," Haskell said. "I was proud of how hard they battled in the stifling heat and wind." Hope Karels at first flight singles and Amelia Pederson at fourth flight singles both moved into the semifinals following quarterfinal wins for the Bulldogs. Karels scored a super-tiebreaker victory over an opponent from Spearfish in her quarter, while Pederson grabbed a super breaker win over a foe from St. Thomas More. Milbank Are
