SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Roncalli won a pair of place-winning matches and moved up a spot in the team standings to cap off its tennis season during the Class A girls’ state tournament on Tuesday.
The Cavaliers finished seventh as a team with 142 points. Milbank Area was 10th with 119.
“The team placing seventh is right where we have been all year long,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell. “If we could’ve jumped a seed or two in a couple of flights we could’ve really bettered our team standings, but I am not at all disappointed with where we were.”
The Cavaliers won four matches on the day and each one was memorable.
Even though it was not a placing match, the top flight doubles squad of Katherine Kretchman and River Haskell grabbed a solid win to get into the fifth place match.
“The biggest highlight of the day would otherwise go unnoticed, but Kat and River had a standout performance in their 8-6 win against Spearfish,” Coach Haskell said. “The two teams were perfectly matched and exchanged long rally after long rally. It was really exciting to watch.”
Two Roncalli players won their final singles matches of the year. River Haskell clamed fifth place at flight two with an 8-6 victory over an opponent from Pierre. Anna Mitzel finished ninth at fourth flight with a 10-6 victory over a foe from Madison.
“River’s singles performance was also notable. She had to battle through her first match of the day with a 7-5 tiebreak victory,” Coach Haskell said. “Then she played a girl she struggled with and lost to earlier in the season. She put together a game plan and executed it flawlessly and cruised to an 8-6 victory.”
Coach Haskell also made special mention of Mitzel, the lone senior on this year’s team.
“Anna Mitzel has been one of the most coachable players I have ever had and a real joy to have on our team,” Haskell said. “She always plays hard, gives her best and does it with integrity.”

Keira Rivett finished sixth at flight five singles as did the top flight doubles tandem of Kretchman and River Haskell.
“I love our team and am extremely proud of the effort through the entirety of the season,” Coach Haskell said. “We have a slew of sixth and seventh-graders filtering into the program, so the future looks promising for us as well.”
Amelia Pederson of Milbank led the Bulldogs with a third place finish at flight four singles in a tight match that she pulled out 10-8 in a tiebreaker. Teammate Hope Karels finished fourth at top flight singles.
