Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 15-21:

Last year on Oct. 15, 2022: Chad Becker of Aberdeen won the WISSOTA Late Model national championship this season with 3,220 points. Becker competed in 40 feature races with 32 top five finishes and 14 wins. Becker, who was the track champ at Watertown this season, was second in the nation last season. This is Becker’s third Late Model national title (2019 and 2012).

10 years ago on Oct. 18, 2013: Rapid City Central senior Shane O’Connell rode Bad Romance to a score of 71 at 6:35 p.m. in the Bareback division of the South Dakota Rodeo Association Finals at the James Kjerstad Event Center. He was a little late for his football game at 7 p.m. a few blocks away at Rapid City’s O’Harra Stadium, but the linebacker made one of the key plays of the game when he intercepted a pass in the third quarter that he returned to the RCS’s two-yard line. That led to the eventual game-winning touchdown in Central’s 14-7 win over rival Rapid City Stevens.

20 years ago on Oct. 18, 2003: Bison (1-3) has canceled the second half of its football season as team numbers have dwindled to nine, including seventh-graders.

30 years ago on Oct. 16, 1993: The Aberdeen Central boys’ cross country team won the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet in Yankton. The Golden Eagles were paced by the third-place finish of David Larson and the seventh-place finish of Guy Thorton.

40 years ago on Oct. 21, 1983: Black Hills State men runners continue to dominate the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference. The Yellow Jackets won their 11th straight SDIC cross country title. Last spring, they won their 13 th straight SDIC track and field championship.

50 years ago on Oct. 21, 1973: The Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Mets 5-2 in Game 7 of the World Series to win their second MLB title in a row. Mitchell graduate and Oakland starting second baseman Dick Green retired after that game. He would later unretire and return to help Oakland win a third consecutive World Series in 1974. Despite going 0-13 in the 1974 Series, Green won the Babe Ruth Award for the best overall performance in the 1974 post-season. In game three of the 1974 Series on Oct. 15, Green helped Oakland defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 by starting three double plays in that one game. Green would later retire for good with a .240 career batting average, 960 hits, 80 homers, 422 RBIs and 427 runs scored in a 12-year MLB career, all with the Athletics.
