JAMESTOWN, N.D. – It all came down to some puck luck for the Aberdeen Cougars Monday night.

The Cougars scored the lone goal of the game on a fortunate play in the closing seconds of the second period in a 1-0 girls’ hockey win over Jamestown.

“We got a lucky break on our goal, but that happens sometimes,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister.

With the clock winding down to end the second period, Allison Woehl was coming out the penalty box and received a pass from Kailyn Poppen going toward the blue line on a breakaway. However, Weinmeister said the puck got away from Woehl as she headed toward the goal.

“The goalie came out to play it, but it had enough on it coming off of Allison’s stick that it slid under the goalie just past the goal line,” Weinmeister said. “Those things happen sometimes in hockey, and we were just fortunate to receive it in our favor.”

The puck went into the goal with just two-tenths of a second remaining in the period.

Aberdeen was up to the task defensively, recording its third straight shutout of the young season.

“It was a great game. We had to battle every shift, but were able to create opportunities offensively for us,” Weinmeister said. “I loved our defensive effort that showed in our back checking.”

Chloe Vikander was once again solid in goal for the Cougars to help preserve the victory. She finished with 23 saves on the night.

“Chloe played huge in net for us and came up with some big saves,” Weinmeister said.

Aberdeen, 3-0, is off for the rest of the week following three games in three days to start the season that concluded with a win over a quality foe on the road.

“Overall, pleased with the game, because it definitely pushed us,” Weinmeister said, “and we came together as a team working together to secure the win.”
