Intriguing matchups await area Class B teams in SoDak 16

There are a half dozen Class B volleyball teams that will be competing in SoDak 16 matches on Tuesday night, including a pair that faced each other during the regular season.

A trip to the state tournament Nov. 16-18 in Rapid City awaits the winners of those contests. Expect some good battles, which include some East River-West River clashes.

Here is a look at each matchup involving area sqauds:

No. 9 Faulkton (23-9) vs. No. 8 Hitchcock-Tulare (24-7), 7 p.m. at Mellette

There will be plenty of emotion and intensity on display in this matchup.

The two teams are close in proximity, play many of the same teams during the season, and even faced each other once.

Hitchcock-Tulare won a previous match in four sets back on Sept. 5. Both squads have come up big when it mattered most down the stretch.

Faulkton has been to five state tournaments and Hitchcock-Tulare has been to a pair (once as Hitchcock).

The Patriots went through a couple of streaks during the season, losing three in a row at one point, but also winning six in a row, including a road win at third-rated Northwestern to get to this stage.

Meanwhile, Faulkton toughened up against a schedule that included four teams in the Class A SoDak 16. The Trojans went 2-2 against those squads, defeating Elkton-Lake Benton and Aberdeen Roncalli, and losing to Miller and Groton.

No. 16 Tripp-Delmont-Armour (11-15) vs. No. 1 Warner (36-0), 6 p.m. at Huron Arena

Everything appears to be in favor of Warner in this match. The two-time defending State B champs have been lights out this season. Not only are the Monarchs unbeaten, they have taken on all comers, including foes from Class AA and A. Warner has lost two just sets the entire season.

Warner has been to 14 state tournaments and is in search of its ninth overall state championship. The Monarchs have finished runner-up five times.

Tripp-Delmont-Armour on the other hand has been to just one state tournament total. Tripp-Delmont went in 1999. It should be noted that the Nighthawks avenged an earlier setback with a win over Avon in the region to get to this stage.

No. 12 Herreid-Selby Area (21-6) vs. No. 5 Burke (31-4), 7 p.m. at Chamberlain

These two programs are no strangers to volleyball at a high level.

Herreid-Selby Area has qualified for seven state tourneys (three coming as Selby Area), while Burke has been to five state tournaments (three as Burke-South Central).

Herreid-Selby Area has won seven matches in a row, while the Cougars have won 24 of their last 25 matches with the lone loss coming against Wagner, which is in Class A SoDak 16.

There should be no shortage of action at the net in this one.

The Wolverines have three players 6-feet or taller, while Burke has two players with that height.

No. 11 Kadoka Area (23-11) vs. No. 6 Wolsey-Wessington (28-4), 6:30 p.m. at Fort Pierre

This could be an interesting encounter here.

Each squad has only been to the state tournament one time. The Warbirds were there last season, and while they lost a big part of their lineup to graduation, they do have some players with state tournament experience. Kadoka Area’s only trip to state came back in 1982.

Wolsey-Wessington had to come up big in its region after falling behind by two sets in the semifinal. The Warbirds have beaten fellow SoDak 16 participants Hitchcock-Tulare and Miller twice this season.

The Kougars have won five matches in a row and racked up 23 victories in all against a quality schedule that included a pair of Class AA foes as well as several quality Class A opponents.

No. 10 Philip (24-10) vs. No. 7 Castlewood (20-8), 7 p.m. at James Valley Christian

This is another intriguing cross-river matchup.

Philip has been to 10 state tournaments in the past, but not since 2015. Castlewood has only qualified twice, but one of those times was last season.

Both squads have been battled-tested throughout the season.

Castlewood has quality wins over Class A foes Estelline-Hendricks, Elkton-Lake Benton and Flandreau, the latter two of which are in the Class A SoDak 16. Meanwhile, the Scotties lost to three Class A SoDak participants in Rapid City Christian, Hill City and Aberdeen Roncalli.
