A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Nov. 5-11:

Last year on Nov. 5, 2022: The NSU volleyball team defeated Bemidji 3-1 to make coach Brent Aldridge the Wolves’ winningest volleyball coach in school history. Aldridge is 224-98 in his 12th season at NSU. Before Aldridge took over in 2011, Lisa Schriver went 223-237 in 15 seasons (1996-2010) as the Wolves’ head coach.

10 years ago on Nov. 5, 2013: Minnesota-Crookston beat Augustana 3-0 in volleyball, and the teams set a national DII scoring record in their 37-35 first set.

20 years ago on Nov. 10, 2003: Aberdeen Central advanced the State 11AA football championship by defeating Sioux Falls O’Gorman 21-8 in the semifinals. Coach Mike Flakus’ Golden Eagles got touchdowns from Brian Jark (67-yard run and 42-yard pass from Taylor Mehlhaff) and Dirk Remily (5-yard run).

30 years ago on Nov. 6, 1993: The South Dakota Silver Bullets amateur baseball team won the Over-30 World Series national championship in Phoenix. Competing against teams with rosters of former pro players and 2½ months after it season ended, the Silver Bullets were managed by Dan Sabers of Salem. Kevin Leighton of Madison was the Series’ MVP with two pitching wins and a batting average of well over .500.

40 years ago on Nov. 11, 1983: Iowa State quarterback David Archer broke an 11-year-old Big Eight Conference record for total yards in a conference season. He now has 2,507 yards, breaking the conference record of 2,387 set by Aberdeen native and former Iowa State standout George Amundson in 1972.

50 years ago on Nov. 10, 1973: Garry Bentley (Australia) and Cyle Wold (Veblen) led South Dakota State to the national college cross country championship in the NCAA College Division. Bentley won the national championship race in Wheaton (IL) while Wold finished fifth. On Nov. 19, Bentley and Wold went to Spokane (WA) to compete in the NCAA University Division national championships. Steve Prefontaine of Oregon won the six-mile race in 28:14.8 while Bentley finished eighth (28:44) and Wold 92nd (30:15).
