Warner senior Brodey Sauerwein has been a Swiss army knife for the Monarchs football program.
Sauerwein has played multiple positions throughout his career, and the position changes began even before his varsity career.
“In middle school I was running back, fullback, middle and outside linebacker,” Sauerwein said.
Once he started playing at the varsity level, Sauerwein became a quarterback before making another position change.
“I went to high school and they needed a quarterback,” Sauerwein said. “I’ll do whatever to help the team, so I went to quarterback, and then about my junior year I started playing defensive end.”
This season, Sauerwein still saw the field as a defensive end, although his position on offense changed yet again. When he found out he was being moved from quarterback to tight end, Sauerwein willingly accepted the position change.
“I’ll do whatever,” Sauerwein said. “The coaches, when they told me I’m moving to tight end, I was cool with it. Whatever will help the team. I know Hunter (Cramer) is obviously a good quarterback, so I had a little bit of a feeling that (the coaches) would do that.”

Warner head coach Kerwin Hoellein said he was impressed with how Sauerwein handled the change heading into this season.
“I think anytime that a kid who has been playing quarterback for a season and then going into his senior year, to tell him by the way, you’re not going to be the quarterback next year, that’s not something that every kid is going to accept,” Hoellein said. “Everybody wants to be that quarterback, and he did it for the betterment of the team, whether he liked it or not.”
Sauerwein said he now enjoys playing tight end for the team.
“I don’t mind it. I love tight end,” Sauerwein said. “I love blocking and catching passes.”
Hoellein said Sauerwein put in a lot of offseason work, which has shown on the field this season.
“He has spent a lot of time in the weight room and has really turned himself into a very good tight end for us, and maybe even a better defensive end for us,” Hoellein said. “So, him transferring to the line play has been very beneficial for us.”

Sauerwein has been a part of the Monarchs recent trips to the state championship game in 2020 and last season. Both trips ended with runner-up finishes, and Sauerwein says that has Warner motivated to win the state title this season.
“Honestly just having a little bit of a sour taste in our mouth,” Sauerwein said. “Warner never winning the Dome, we’re really working hard to be the first ones.”
This season, Sauerwein has tried to enjoy his final year of high school football as the Monarchs pursue the school’s first state title.
“We’ve worked really hard all season and we’re seeing it pay off,” Sauerwein said. “It’s my senior season, so I’ve just tried to enjoy it as much as I can, which I think I’ve been doing.”
Sauerwein and the Monarchs have one hurdle left before they can claim the school’s first state championship in football. Warner will take on Deubrook Area in the Class 9A state championship game at 2 p.m. on Thursday, and Sauerwein said if the team plays like it has all season, he likes the chances of winning the state title.
He also said it would be a great way to cap off his high school football career.
“In every person that plays football, that’s kind of their goal is to win a state championship,” Sauerwein said. “It would be really cool to do it my senior year and do it with this team we’ve got. We all get along really well and I like all of our guys, a lot of my buddies, and it would just be awesome.”
