WEBSTER – Aberdeen Roncalli used hot shooting to race past Webster for a 61-37 Northeast Conference girls’ basketball win on Saturday afternoon.
The Cavaliers made 14 3-pointers to pull away from the Bearcats during the contest and improve to 6-0 on the season.
It took a while for Roncalli to get going as the Cavaliers led by just three points after the opening quarter.
“We didn’t defend very well in the first half,” said Roncalli coach Derek Larson. “We had too many turnovers in the first quarter.”
Roncalli extended its lead to 12 points by halftime after making a few adjustments in the second quarter.
“Once we slowed down offensively, we shot the ball and moved the ball well,” Larson said. “After the first quarter we ended up speeding up the tempo and they turned the ball over quite a few times.”
In the second half, the Cavalier defense clamped down on the Bearcats, allowing just 12 points, while Roncalli doubled that output on offense.
“We played much better overall in the second half of the basketball game,” Larson said.
Maddie Huber led Roncalli with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, while Ava Hanson had 15 points and four 3-pointers. McKenna O’Keefe had 14 points.
Erin Sannes led Webster with 14 points, while Bailee Ninke had six.
The Bearcats (3-3) will travel to Deuel on Thursday, while the Cavaliers will host Sisseton on Friday in a marquee matchup of unbeaten teams at Roncalli Gym.
