WATERTOWN – The start to the boys’ wrestling season could not have gone much better for Aberdeen Central on Saturday.
Not only did the Golden Eagles go undefeated in four duals at the Marv Sherrill Dual Tournament, they also were able to rotate a variety of wrestlers into the lineup throughout the day.
“We were able to get quite a few other kids into our lineup,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We gave some split time. It was an overall team contribution there.”
Central, which finished third at the tourney a year ago, picked up wins over Milbank 57-9, Yankton 72-9 Tea Area 45-33, before defeating Watertown 40-26 in the championship match.
“We have a lot of depth right now and we’re able to use it,” Bowden said. “We’re just trying to figure out where we’re going to be and whose really going to slot in and take over everything.”
The Eagles were able to substitute members into and out of their lineup without any drop off in quality.
“It was a good to get a lot of people some time and see how they did,” Bowden said. “It was like whoever you inserted they stepped up to occasion.”
Bowden said the dual-tournament format allowed him to take a look at all of the wrestlers throughout the course of the day.

“The nice thing with the four duals, is you get watch everyone wrestle. You get to see everyone,” Bowden said. “It’s not a tournament where we’re all running around, we’ve got multiple matches going on at once. You get to see everyone from start to finish, so you have more of an evaluation process.”
Central now heads west for a big week of wrestling. The Golden Eagles face Sioux Falls Washington and Sioux Falls Lincoln in duals on Thursday at The Monument in Rapid City, before competing in the two-day Rapid City Invitational which will feature 60 teams from a six-state area on Friday and Saturday.
The Eagles will take along some momentum gained from Saturday’s dual tourney.
“It’s a great start. We understand that it’s a start,” Bowden said. “We just have to look forward to the next week and get better. That’s all it is. Each week we just have to look at it and we have to figure one step up.”
