MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Aberdeen Cougars found the back of the net with regularity in a pair of games to open the Junior Gold boys’ hockey tournament on Friday.

The Cougars outscored Lakeville 12-2 in their first game and then blanked New Prague 6-0 in their second contest.

“We’ve been really good in the offensive zone, and generated a lot of scoring chances,” said Cougars coach Jeremey Backous.

A total of nine different Cougars scored against Lakeville, led by Devon Fischbach with three, all in a six-goal second period. Lance Siefken added a pair of goals.

Aberdeen then blistered the New Prague goal with a whopping 71 shots in the second contest. Brady Huff led the Cougars with a pair of goals in that game.

“It was fun to see them find the back of the net,” Backous said of his players.

Aberdeen has two more contests today to determine whether it will advance to Sunday’s competition. The Cougars face Mitchell at 10:15 this morning and then takes on Minot this evening.
