The Aberdeen Cougars got back to form Sunday afternoon in a girls’ hockey win over the Watertown Lakers.

One day after dropping their first game of the season, the Cougars led from start to finish in a 4-1 victory at the Odde Ice Center.

“We talked about character (Saturday) night and how we respond after (Saturday),” said Aberdeen coach Rob Weinmeister. “I thought we started the game strong with lots of pressure and puck movement.”

The Cougars scored two goals within a minute early in the first period to set the tone for the rest of the game. Olivia Sandvig found the back of the net first, before Allison Woehl added a second goal just 59 seconds later.

The Cougars added two more goals in the second period as Kailyn Poppen and Raniesa Mattke each scored for the home team.

While Watertown eventually broke through for a goal in the third period, Aberdeen dominated play on the ice with 28 shots on goal compared to just seven for the Lakers.

“I liked our effort today and saw some good things,” Weinmeister said. “Defensively, we played much better, but still some things to address this week in practice.”

The Cougars, 4-1 on the season, will play a rare Friday matinee contest when they host Dickinson, N.D., at 2 p.m. at the Odde Ice Center.

“We’ll continue to work on getting better as individual players, as a line, and as a team,” Weinmeister said, “both in our play as well as our support for our teammates.”
