Golden Eagles kick off gymnastics season

The Aberdeen Central gymnastics team got its season off to a positive start Thursday night, as the Golden Eagles hosted Jamestown in a dual at the Auxiliary Gym.

And while the visiting Blue Jays held a 136.60 to 129.00 advantage in team points at the end of the night, Central coach Mickey Everson was pleased with the way her team performed.

“I think everybody was feeling (some nerves),” Everson said. “We have some skills we’re ready to throw, but we held back today, because they’re just not quite there. I think the girls were wary about doing it, so we just held back a little bit and just did what we knew was safe. So the potential is there to do more. But even some of the things we did do paid off.”

Central was led by the trio of Addison Everson, Alexis Bomesberger and Johanna Jarrott, who finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the all-around competition.

Jarrott, the lone senior on the Golden Eagle roster, said she was also happy with the way the team started the season.

“I think our goal was really to just get the first meet out of the way and try and be confident, and not worry too much about the scores,” Jarrott said. “Just have fun as a team before the season really gets going. … I think we did really well.”

Jarrott said she felt strongest on bars during Thursday’s competition, but was also excited to see where her floor exercise routine could take her as the season continues.

“I have some new stuff I’ve been working on to put in later in the season,” she said, “so (I’m) just working on getting those things in there.”

Coach Everson echoed Jarrott’s sentiment for her team as a whole.

“It’s thrilling to see them hit that skill for the first time,” Everson said. “They come over and they’re like, ‘Yes! I did it.’ That excitement is there. A lot of these girls are going to do some new things, so I’m excited for that for them.”

Central will have little time to mull Thursday’s successes or falls, as the Golden Eagles will head to Pierre Saturday for the Pierre Invitational.
