A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 3-9:

Last year on Dec. 5, 2022: Aberdeen native and second-year Tennessee coach Josh Heupel was named coach of the year in the SEC by the Associated Press. He coached the Vols to a 10-2 record and No. 6 ranking in the regular season. Meanwhile, Milbank native Kalen DeBoer of Washington and Jonathan Smith of Oregon State were named co-football coaches of the year in the PAC-12 Conference. DeBoer coached his Huskies to a 10-2 and No. 12 rankings in the regular season and is only the second UW coach (Don James) in school history to claim the conference coach of the year honor.

10 years ago on Dec. 8, 2013: Ron Feickert, 69, of Aberdeen died. He retired from the American News in 2012 after a 47-year career — 39 in sports.

20 years ago on Dec. 5, 2003: Hillary White of Aberdeen Central was named an all-state volleyball player in Class AA. Making the second team was White’s teammate Chelsea Brandlee.

30 years ago on Dec. 4, 1993: In the State A girls’ basketball championship game in Huron, Howard defeated Miller 69-47 to snap the Rustlers’ 73-game winning streak. In the State AA championship game in Watertown, the Arrows defeated Mitchell 45-26 to snap the Kernels’ 45-game winning streak. In the State B title game in Mitchell, Colome (24-0) defeated Edmunds Central 50-48 as Tori Cox provided the game-winning points with her steal and layup with 47 seconds left.

40 years ago on Dec. 6, 1983: Aaron Bowers made an 18-foot shot at the buzzer to lift Pierre over Aberdeen Central 57-55 in boys’ basketball. The Golden Eagles, led by Mike Pietz’s 19 points, were ahead most of the game. The Governors got 27 points from Darrell Lingle.

50 years ago on Dec. 8, 1973: Jane Wipf of Freeman won the girls’ 14-15 National AAU Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships. Jane covered the two-mile course in Nashville (TN) in 11:44, winning by 100 yards.
