Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 17-23:

Last year on Dec. 21, 2022: With an enrollment of 816, Pierre Riggs High School had two of its football players sign to play in the Big Ten Conference. Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz will play for Ohio State while lineman Jason Maciejczak will play for Nebraska. The Governors have won six straight state championships. Kienholz finished with one of the most impressive big-school career stat lines in the history of South Dakota high school football: 9,100 passing yards with 104 TDs, 3,502 rushing yards with 44 TDs and three-time All-State and three-time state championship game MVP.

10 years ago on Dec. 17, 2013: University of Michigan freshman goalie Zach Nagelvoort — fresh from playing for the Aberdeen Wings last season — was named the Big 10 hockey player of the week. In his first 10 games playing for the Wolverines, Nagelvoort had six wins, one tie, four Big 10 awards and was second in the nation with a 1.67 goals-against average.

20 years ago on Dec. 20, 2003: Adam Grant, Aaron Busack, Kyle Schwan, Matt Hammer and Steve Smiley combined for 59 points to lead NSU past Augustana 78-67. Jon Wagner scored 35 for Augie.

30 years ago on Dec. 22, 1993: Nicole Akin (Northwestern) and JoEllen Hofer (Hitchcock) were first-team members of the Class B All-State basketball squad. Erin Smith (Tulare) and Crystal Conn (Edmunds Central) were on the second team while Susie Gaikowski (Waubay) was on the third team.

40 years ago on Dec. 20, 1983: Yankton defeated Pierre 39-34 to win the girls’ basketball State A title. In the nine years of girls’ state tournaments, coach Bob Winter’s Yankton Gazelles have won five titles (1983, 1977-79 and 1975), finished second twice (1982, 1981) and third once (1976).

50 years ago on Dec. 17, 1973: Sioux Falls College held on to the basketball for the final two minutes of a tied game against visiting Northern State. With three seconds left, Dave Krauth of SFC hit a turn-around jumper to give his team a 69-67 win. It was Krauth’s first points of the second half and he ended with seven points for coach Dutch Erickson’s winners. Bill Christensen scored 24 for coach Bob Wachs’ Wolves.
