Aberdeen Roncalli was in a hurry to get things done Thursday night.

The Cavaliers got out in transition at every opportunity and finally subdued Webster 67-58 in a Northeast Conference boys’ basketball contest at Roncalli Gym.

“It was one of those deals where we preached getting out in transition today and we did just that,” said Roncalli coach Dan Gallagher.

The Cavaliers snapped a three-game losing skid with the win. Gallagher said the team was motivated heading into the game.

“I think our guys came in with a little bit of fire,” Gallagher said.

That was evident early on as Roncalli overcame a four-point deficit to take a 19-13 lead after the opening period on Aiden Fisher’s three-point field goal at the buzzer. After scoring seven points in the first quarter, Fisher added seven more in the second period to help stake the Cavaliers to a 36-26 halftime lead.

It turned out that Roncalli would need that double-digit cushion before the night was finished.

The Cavaliers threatened to pull away, opening up 17-point leads on two different occasions, only to have the Bearcats battle back.

“They kept hitting shots. We were up in their face,” Fisher said. “They just have great players on their team.”

Webster cut a 17-point deficit down to nine late in the third quarter before Roncalli scored six straight points in transition to restore that margin at the end of the period. It was a reoccurring theme throughout the game as the Cavaliers consistently beat their counterparts down the floor for easy baskets.

“That’s what killed us,” said Webster coach Jared Vergeldt. “We battled back. We kind of got down a little bit. We’d make a little run and just start feeling good about ourselves … get right back in the game and then boom there’s two turnovers in a row and they’d come down and score off of them. That’s the name of the game.”

Fisher said the team makes it a point to get out in transition.

“Every practice we take pride in transition points,” Fisher said. “We look at them every game, and we’re pretty proud of them this game.”

Again, the Bearcats were far from finished. They chopped the lead down to nine, and had a three-point field goal rattle in and out midway through the final quarter that could have made it a two-possession game.

“We never give up,” said Webster junior Ian Lesnar. “We got down pretty big, but we always claw our way back.”

In the end, however, the hole was too big and Roncalli’s response too solid for the Bearcats to overcome.

“We couldn’t get a stop,” Lesnar said. “We couldn’t get around the curve.”

The Cavaliers not only scored in transition, but also made Webster pay from the perimeter as Fisher, Keegan Stewart, and Maddox Miller each made a pair of three-point shots in the contest.

“The best teams are inside-out teams and Roncalli, the last three years as Gallagher as a coach, every year they’ve gotten a little better and a little better, and now they’ve got an inside-outside game,” Vergeldt said. “They’re going to be hard to handle. We just couldn’t handle both sides of their offense.”

Jack Shoemaker scored 15 points in a reserve role to lead Webster. Lesnar – who made all five of his shots including four 3-pointers – added 14 points, and Matt Mount contributed 12.

The Bearcats have played a solid schedule to start out their campaign.

“I think it’s best playing the better teams,” Lesnar said, “because you’re going to find your identity as a team.”

Fisher and Miller each connected for 21 points to lead Roncalli. Stewart added 11, and Parker Grieben finished with 10.

Roncalli, 2-3 on the season, has also faced some top-notch competition and will continue to do so, hosting unbeaten Leola-Frederick on Thursday at Roncalli Gym.

“They’ve got some solid players. (Coach Brock) Pashen has done a really nice job with that group,” Gallagher said. “Brayden Sumption’s playing really well, the (Noah) Kippley kid, they’ve got some strong players inside, so it’s going to take a full team effort.”
