Central boys win three of four at East-West duals

PIERRE – Aberdeen Central had a marquee victory, before falling against its next foe during the East-West Dual Wrestling Tournament in Pierre on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles rolled past Rapid City Central 65-13 before knocking off unbeaten Sturgis 29-27. However, Central then fell to Rapid City Stevens 32-24, and then wrapped the day with a 71-3 victory over Spearfish.

“We kind of built some momentum through the first one, got our hands on people, kind of got the nerves out and built into the Sturgis dual,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “They’re a monster of a team and everyone just knuckled up and did it. They did what they had to do to keep it close or to go find bonus points. And we beat them and then kind of a slid and had a setback in that Stevens dual. We just had some things not go our way and then we rebounded through the Spearfish dual. So I guess you could say, we kind of had some ups and downs.”

The Eagles needed every single point in order to take down Sturgis, one of the elite teams in the state.

“It was good. It was a complete dual. You had everything in it,” Bowden said. “You had some pins, you had some guys that fought off bonus points that kept their scores close. We had some younger guys step up and fulfill their role. They just went out and did it.”

However, Central was unable to keep the momentum going against Stevens.

“They’re kind of a matchup nightmare for us,” Bowden said.

Going 3-1 on the day was a solid showing, but Bowden is already looking ahead to a demanding schedule this upcoming week.

“We’ll be happy with it for right now,” Bowden said, “(Sunday) we have to get back to work, because we’ve got a tough week coming.”

That week includes duals against Brandon Valley and Yankton at Yankton on Tuesday, duals against Watertown at Harrisburg at Harrisburg on Thursday, and hosting the annual Lee Wolf Tournament on Saturday at Golden Eagles Arena.
