Central girls split wrestling duals

HARRISBURG – The Aberdeen Central girls’ wrestling program got a bit more mat time Thursday, competing nearly a full slate through two duals at the Harrisburg Triangular and coming away with a split of Eastern South Dakota Conference matches.

Central suffered a 36-33 setback against the host Tigers to begin the day.

Still, the Golden Eagles bounced back with a more decisive 39-27 win over Watertown, closing out a four-dual week.

Central, after having just seven contested matches in Tuesday’s triangular against Yankton and Brandon Valley, had nearly full matchups on Thursday, just three open weights in each dual.

“I’m glad everyone got a match,” said Central girls’ coach Jake Flakus. “I know some of them were a little disappointed on Tuesday not getting to wrestle. I’m proud of the way they battled tonight.”

Mayson Gillen (107/114), Allison Neitzel (126), Jasmine Maas (138) and Katrina Gibson (152/165) each recorded two victories for the Golden Eagles. Gillen, Neitzel and Maas each had two pins.

“Allison Neitzel had a really good day,” Flakus said. “She just took what was hers. She had one pin in like 10 seconds and another quick pin against Watertown. She simply just wanted to score points and put the girl on her back.”

After a long week of travel and duals, Central will now turn its attention to a long weekend, as it will host the annual Lee Wolf Invitational Saturday at Golden Eagles Arena.

“I think they’re excited,” Flakus said of the chance to compete at home. “It will be nice to compete in front of their parents, and some cousins and their friends. I know some of them are inviting some friends who have maybe never seen a wrestling match before.”
