The SDHSAA is honored to announce that Steve Charron of Huron, SD was selected to receive a National Officiating Award from the NFHS. Steve is the recipient of the NFHS Active Official Award for Section 5, which includes all officials from the states of Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
A national committee selected Steve Charron for his excellent service as an official. This award exemplifies the highest standards of ethical conduct and moral character. Dr. Karissa Neiehoff, Chief Executive Officer of the NFHS stated that his contributions to high school athletics is truly deserving of our recognition and appreciation.
Steve has been officiating Track and Cross Country for the past 44 years. During that time, he has been a mentor and leader to many officials. He has been a volunteer clinician for new and returning officials, and a rules interpreter for the SDHSAA for many years. Steve is an avid recruiter of officials for the sport. Steve has been the Head Starter at the SDHSAA State Cross Country Championships for 31 years.
He has also been a Starter for the SDHSAA State Track Championships for 28 years.Steve not only works high school Track and Cross Country, but also officiates both NCAA and NAIA Indoor Track/Cross Country competitions. Steve has received several awards such as the NFOA Official of the Year, SDHSAA Distinguished Service award, and ESD Award of Merit to name a few.
Jo Auch, Assistant Executive Director of the SDHSAA states, βSteve was an obvious choice for this award. His passion for the sport speaks for itself. Steve is a great leader and mentor to so many and his dedication to officiating is remarkable. Steve being recognized at a National level speaks very highly of his contributions and character to the sports. We are so proud of him and appreciate everything he does for the SDHSAA and officials across the state.β
Steve will receive his National Award at the State Track Meet in May of 2024. He will also receive a commemorative ring as a gift from the NFHS for this honor. Congratulations Steve.
