HURON – Huron came through under pressure to edge the Aberdeen Cougars 3-2 in overtime in boys’ hockey action on Sunday.

The All Stars scored in the final minute of regulation, and then produced the game-winner midway through the extra period to claim the victory.

“It’s a tough loss,” said Cougars coach Jeremey Backous, “but all credit to Huron. They showed up and competed and kept the game close. Hopefully, we can learn from this loss.”

Quincy Madsen scored off an assist from Micah Kranzler to give Aberdeen a 1-0 lead in the opening period. After the hosts tied the contest, Kranzler scored off a feed from Madsen to put the Cougars back in front.

However, the All Stars tied the game with 36 seconds left in regulation to force OT, and then produced the deciding goal with 5:30 left.

Backous praised the play of Aberdeen goalie Colton Townsend, who ended up with 28 saves.

“Colton played well in the net and gave us a chance to win,” Backous said. “He made some key saves for us to get the game to OT.”

The Cougars, 11-7 on the year, play in a three-day tournament starting Friday in Grand Forks, N.D.
