BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Cougars were unable to maintain a lead in one girls’ hockey contest and had to play from behind in the other during the Brookings Tournament on Saturday.

Aberdeen settled for a 4-4 tie with the Omaha Lancers before falling to Minnetonka, Minn. 2-1 in the other game.

“It was a disappointing tie with Omaha, because we were up 2-0 and let them back into the game,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister.

Alyssa Roehrich had both of Aberdeen’s goals in the opening period. Kailyn Poppen and Madeline Sandvig each found the back of the net in the second period. However, Omaha scored three times in the second and then found the equalizer in the third.

The Cougars gave up two goals in 20 seconds in the first period against Minnetonka and that proved to be the difference. Addyson Keller scored Aberdeen’s lone goal in the third period.

“The game against Minnetonka we were doing well and they got a couple lucky bounce goals that took the wind out of us,” Weinmeister said, “and we couldn’t collect ourselves to play as a team or even for our lines to plays as complete units during our shifts. The effort was there, but the passes and the unity was not.”

Aberdeen takes on Sioux Center in the fifth place game today.
