BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Cougars turned the tables on the Brookings Rangers Friday.

Earlier this week, Aberdeen dropped a 1-0 decision to the Rangers despite outshooting them by a lopsided margin. Friday, the Cougars had no trouble finding the back of the net in a 6-3 win to open play in the Brookings Tournament.

“We played much better today, and we were starting to get the give and go going on the offensive end,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “I know we got a couple goals off that.”

After a 1-1 first period, the Cougars took control with four goals in the second period. Morgan Jones scored twice and assisted on another goal to fuel the surge. Kailyn Poppen scored one goal in the second and another in the third. She also assisted on a first-period goal.

Olivia Sandvig had one goal and one assist, and Alyssa Roehrich had a pair of assists in the victory.

The Cougars outshot Brookings 41-19 in the contest.

“I’m pleased with our effort. There’s still some things we can continue to improve on,” Weinmeister said. “(Saturday) we play two games and are going to need to be playing at the top of our game as we will see some quality teams. Again, this is the type of tournament that makes us better.”

The Cougars are set to play Omaha at noon today, and then face Minnetonka at 8 tonight.
