BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Cougars finished three straight days of girls’ hockey with a strong showing en route to a 6-1 win over Sioux Center in the fifth-place game of the Brookings Tournament on Sunday.

The Cougars, who received goals from six different players, scored in every period on the way to the win.

“It was a good finish to the weekend,” said Aberdeen coach Rob Weinmeister. “Now we need to take the good, improve the areas we need to this week in practice, and try to keep getting better.”

Kailyn Poppen scored the first goal of the game, and after Sioux Center tied the contest, Aberdeen responded with five unanswered goals the rest of the way. Addyson Keller and Raniesa Mattke each found the back of the net in the second period, before Alli Stoltenburg, Morgan Jones, and Rylee Hepper scored in the final period.

Rachel Siefken finished with three assists on the day, and Alyssa Roehrich added a pair of assists.

“Girls started playing together with confidence and were moving the puck and providing puck support more today than (Saturday), and it showed in our opportunities,” Weinmeister said. “We had a little more time to make decisions and passes, which led to those better opportunities.”

The Cougars, 10-6-1 on the season, head back on the road for a game at Watertown on Friday.

“We still need to work on playing consistently and believing in our abilities and each other,” Weinmeister said.
