GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Aberdeen Cougars wrapped up play with a second-place finish in the Grand Forks Lee Haugen boys’ hockey tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars dropped a 3-1 decision to Grand Forks in the championship game.

“It was a great game,” said Cougars coach Jeremey Backous. “It was two evenly matched teams. Our team played hard, we just didn’t get the breaks today. It was a good weekend of hockey.”

Jack Podoll scored Aberdeen’s lone goal on an assist from Levi Little. However, the Cougars weren’t able to find the back of the net again before Grand Forks added the final goal on an empty netter.

Aberdeen outshot Grand Forks 26-25 in the contest.

Colton Townsend had another solid game in goal for the Cougars. He capped the four-game tournament with 67 saves.

“Colton played really well in net again for us,” Backous said.

Aberdeen, 14-8 on the season, plays at Mitchell on Friday, and at Yankton on Saturday.
