A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 31-Jan. 6:

Last year on Dec. 31, 2022: Ian Marshall (Springfield, MO) continued to rack up honors after only one season of NSU football after he was named a finalist for the best defensive player (Cliff Harris Award) from the more than 5,000 defensive players from almost 500 NCAA DII, DIII and and NAIA schools. The All-American Marshall registered a season school record 14 sacks in 2022. Marshall was named the Super Region 4 defensive player of the year. Other All-Americans in NSU football history: Jim Kretchman; Harlan Krein; Morris Bates; Vince Johnson; Daryl Merkwan; Dick Wherry (twice); Gordon Groos; Dave Pastian; Leon Breske; Curt Fredrickson; Larry Kolbo; Kendall Titze; Chuck Farley; Seth Kahn; Steve Hanson; Paul Kemnitz; Jason Landmark (twice); John Carda; Sam Flakus; Bryan Schmidt; Doug Coughlin; Kevin Cox; Tom Scheid; Stacy Roberts; Todd Tatum; Jim Caraway; Tony Kjaglien; Rick Knecht, Ed May (twice); Brent Sheehan; Aaron Ferrie; Kip Kieso; Bill Noble; Dave Guthmiller; Tyrone Morgan (twice); Eric Cuka; Channing Barber (twice); Conner Doherty (twice); Chance Olson; and Dewaylon Ingram.

10 years ago on Dec. 31, 2013: Former SDSU and Rapid City Central standout Adam Vinatieri of the Indianapolis Colts became the seventh NFL player to score 2,000 or more points. The 41-year-old kicker now has 2,006 points, fifth-best on the league’s all-time scoring list.

20 years ago on Jan. 1, 2004: The South Dakota Sports Writers Association named Don Meyer of Northern State as its 2003 college men’s coach of the year for all sports.

30 years ago on Jan. 1, 1994: The South Dakota Sports Writers Association named the Miller Rustlers as its 1993 high school girls’ team of the year for all sports. Coach Charles Sizer’s team had a 73-game winning streak until the last game of the season. Howard defeated Miller for the State A championship.

40 years ago on Jan. 3, 1984: Deb Esche (28 points), Ronda Moe (16) and Lisa Card (15) paced Northern State over Minnesota-Morris 96-73 in women’s basketball.

50 years ago on Jan. 4, 1974: Aberdeen Central has two wrestlers rated second in the state in their weight classes: Rod Melcher at 105 pounds and Charles Call at heavyweight.
